Do We Choose Our Delusions?

Standard definition for the word delusion is: an idiosyncratic belief or impression that is firmly maintained despite being contradicted by what is generally accepted as reality or rational argument. Like many words we use, this one has some range in how we use it. People often think that delusion is extreme. It’s often seen as a trait found in others and not in oneself.

In psychology, delusion is usually referenced as a symptom of mental disorder. I believe every thinking person interacting in the world has some delusion or another. I’m not trying to dumb down the word, but I do believe there’s a less intense version of it than what might be represented in psychological studies.

It’s also not to say that what is currently a delusion might not be true somehow or some way. Unless we are living in an extremely linear world where everything can be answered yes or no with absolute certainty, there’s always going to be room for variance. This variance can bring great perspective. It can be a bridge amongst vantage points.

How can we honor delusion, and embrace that it exists in each of us. Integrative the shadow aspects of delusion, while honoring the role it plays for us. Any belief, even one deemed delusional, often serves a purpose. A delusion may actually be grounding to the individual, a linchpin holding other beliefs together. When faced and dismantle, in can lead to things falling apart and subsequent rebuilding.

If you’re feeling daring, you can shine some light on a hidden delusion that you may have. Pick one belief that you may be clinging to that others might find irrational. Can you even challenge yourself to play with this kind of exercise? This is not about trying to prove what is ‘right’ or what is ‘wrong’ — it’s about flexing a muscle that exercises ability to shift perspectives within yourself — if only for an exercise — to see how firmly implanted that belief has become.
